Stancil reviewed the Priority List for May 2000 -June 2001 . He highlighted Item
3 : " Purchase or otherwise acquire lands in the Seven - Mile Creek Natural Area ,
especially those that are part of the identified natural areas/wildlife habitat
adjacent to County lands . He noted that the purpose is to preserve one of the
County 's largest intact identified natural areas ( which already contains land
preserved by the County and other entities ) .
Stancil also reported on the proposed Little River Regional Park and Natural Area .
He said the BOCC would consider exercising the option to purchase the property
, on May 16t" . The BOCC will also consider applying to Land and Water
Conservation Fund for a grant to develop an access road and parking areas for
the park . Stancil noted that the County closed on the purchase of land for the
McGowan Creek Preserve ( March 31 , 2000 ) and is also working on expanding
land holdings for the proposed new Cedar Grove District Park . CfE members
asked about the process for developing trails at County parks . Stancil reported
on a process for development of trails in coordination with the Recreation & Parks
Department .
c . Green Tract / C &D Issues
The BOCC has proposed the dedication of 60 acres in the northern portion of the
Greene Tract to Orange County . The plan will go to Chapel Hill and Carrboro for
their review and approval .
The C&D Task Force held its last meeting on May 1st and will present a draft
report to the BOCC in June . The major recommendation is asking the BOCC to
consider adopting a solid waste ordinance that might mandate recycling of
certain C& D materials . The report will also suggest how to handle those
materials , how they would be processed , and also extensive outreach/ education
to the groups who produce C&D materials .
d . Alternative Fuels (AFLEV) group
The Alternative Fuels and Low Emission Vehicle work group is scheduling a
meeting soon . ERCD had a meeting with Senator Kinnaird and Representative
Insko about a month ago . Senator Kinnaird identified some Department of
Commerce money that might be available for an alternative fueled vehicle . Staff
hopes to continue efforts to convert the county motor vehicle fleet over to low -
emission vehicles on the replacement schedule where feasible and to apply for a
grant for mobile source emission reductions .
VII . Planning for Clear - Cutting Forum and Joint Meeting with Durham
Environmental Board .
Stancil noted that these two proposed meetings were identified in the CfE Goals
for FY 2000 - 01 . He noted that the Planning Board might be interested in co -
hosting a proposed forum on forest management practices in Orange County .
Potential dates , topics , speakers , and target audience were discussed .
