" <br /> ➢ Ongoing issues - review and advise staff on Lands Legacy acquisitions . <br /> ➢ Review and promote sustainable forestry programs on hold for now , although <br /> still considered a high priority . <br /> Water Resources Committee - Whisnant reported using the 2001 WRC report <br /> recommendations as a starting point to set goals and identify high priority tasks : <br /> • Radon investigation program within county <br /> • Ground water monitoring program ; potential contamination sites <br /> • Compile of data from existing reports from state and federal agencies <br /> • Develop water budget ( or hydrogeology budget ) for county watersheds <br /> ( This will provide information on groundwater recharge rates , groundwater <br /> availability , and the effects of land use changes on the hydrology . ) <br /> • Recharge rates and sustainable yield <br /> • Establish a well protection radius for new development <br /> • Promote conservation through reclamation <br /> • Establish a county position to work on groundwater issues <br /> • Work with staff on developing a package for the BOCC <br /> Okun reported that OWASA is looking into water reclamation . He explained that <br /> planning for reclamation is urgent in order to have it ready for campus growth in <br /> the next 5 to 10 years . Okun said he would prepare draft letter from the CfE to <br /> BOCC suggesting that the OWASA appointees be asked to promote reclamation and <br /> to urge OWASA to pursue reclamation seriously . <br /> Tucker pointed out how a few of the committee goals conflict with others , but also <br /> how some goals complement others . She said CfE could consider combining <br /> recommendations from air quality transportations issues to make sure the UNC <br /> campus expansion is sustainable . Whisnant added that the Water Resources <br /> Committee recommends establishing a new staff position that would focus efforts <br /> on ground water issues rather than the group advocating larger lot sizes . <br /> Daniel suggested adding a goal of WRC develop a plan to link the surface and <br /> ground water programs together . <br /> Environmental Education Committee - Wachholz reported that committee <br /> members need to know what elements of the website need to be updated . The <br /> goal of developing a folder of educational materials was discussed previously , and it <br /> was decided that the committee would , instead , develop an education strategy on <br /> county environmental issues , programs and resources . Jurgelski volunteered to <br /> contact the School of Journalism to seek volunteer writers . Wachholz agreed to <br /> present the SOE report to schools twice a year .
