Daniel added that the WRC talked about expanding their work to cover the multi -
county region . Members discussed the idea of exploring a joint funding proposal for
a staff position , as the budget restraints are likely to allow the creation of new
positions for air quality or water quality . Randall added that it would be good to
have some projects in mind to go with the recommended position . Whisnant noted
that the same idea was presented in the air quality section of SOE report - to
collaborate with other counties on air quality work . The group agreed to ask Stancil
and Kincaid to get together to investigate joint funding possibilities .
Other follow - up comments on the SOE report included :
• Develop a short , bulleted brochure that includes highlights from Stancil
presentation
Executive Summary needed to give out at the May 6tr, BOCC meeting
• Other members felt it ' s important for BOCC to see the whole report
• Something less complicated needed for the general public and / or schools
Shaw reported that ERCD has a draft executive summary that can be edited for
distribution and that staff could develop a brochure , similar to the Lands Legacy
brochure . Members asked staff to get this done . Cotterman agreed to work on this
project with staff .
Members continued discussing their ideas for follow - up and for getting the SOE
recommendations before the commissioners . Members discussed getting the SOE
report to middle school and high school science teachers , and perhaps also to some
elementary schools . Randall suggested going directly to school superintendents to
suggest using the SOE for curriculum planning and to promote the summit .
Wachholz suggested taking the PowerPoint presentation , combine it with elements
from the executive summary and produce it in larger , cheaper quantities along with
a reference that the full report can be download from the ERCD website .
Whisnant suggested the Environmental Education Committee look into ways of
getting students involved in future summits and getting schools to use the SOE
report . Wachholz suggested a school poster contest to promote next year ' s
summit . Smith suggested CfE members be available to go talk about some aspect
of what we do and to introduce the SOE . Randall suggested that the next intern for
ERCD be an " Environmental Education Intern " and for that person to take on this
project . Members thought this was a good idea .
Whisnant suggested getting with other county officials who are certified
environmental educations in the county who already have this job and get them the
report . Jurgelski said the Audubon Society certifies volunteers for environmental
education and it may be a starting point to find a person for this task .
Smith and others agreed it is important to get on the commissioners agenda and
suggested that members show up for the presentation on May 6t " . He suggested
Page 4 of 7
Draft April 14 , 2003
