According to Roe , the first event of this kind was held in
1978 . Shaw offered to contact Roe to learn about that event and to report back .
Members discussed ways of involving students . One idea was distributing the SOE
report to ninth grade teachers and asking them to use the contents for student
projects . Another idea was to have a student poster contest at the next summit .
Members discussed the idea of establishing an Orange County environmental issues
listserve to publicize events , including future summits , and to publicize the SOE
report findings and recommendations .
Members discussed the proposed Conservation Award and the reasons for
eliminating it from this year ' s summit . It was noted that the nomination process
and selection criteria had been finalized . It was suggested that the CfE discuss with
Commissioner Gordon to get a better sense of how to gain BOCC authorization to
move forward with this project . It was decided that the Environmental Education
Committee would take the lead , including finding out the process used by another
advisory board for the annual Pauli Murray Human Relations award . [ That award is
administered by the Orange County Human Relations Commission]
Draft April 14 , 2003
