Update on Lands Legacy Program and Resource Land <br /> Acquisitions <br /> Shaw gave an update of the Lands Legacy Program noting that the BOCC <br /> adopted the new program on April 4t" . He reported that the land <br /> acquisition is underway with ERCD working with other county departments <br /> and land trusts to implement the program . He noted that criteria <br /> developed by the CfE for acquisition of natural areas and wildlife habitat <br /> was adopted with the program , and will be one of the tools used to <br /> identify lands for purchase . The " top 10 " list in the State of the <br /> Environment report will also provide staff with useful guidance for <br /> developing its annual action plan . <br /> Shaw reported that the County completed its first purchase land under the <br /> new program —a 63 - acre parcel from Duke University . The former Duke <br /> Forest property was acquired March 31 , 2000 and will be available for <br /> low - impact recreation uses . Shaw is working on developing suitable <br /> access to the property . <br /> Shaw updated CfE members on the proposed acquisition of land for a <br /> Little River Regional Park and Natural Area . In March the BOCC approved <br /> the terms of Orange County obtaining an option to purchase 135 acres <br /> from the Triangle Community Foundation , Orange County is working with <br /> Durham County, the Eno River Association ( ERA) and the Triangle Land <br /> Conservancy (TLC) to acquire the 391 - acre property, which has over a <br /> mile of frontage on the North Fork of the Little River . Shaw noted that <br /> the two counties received a $ 377 , 000 grant and are eligible to receive <br /> another grant in May . The ERA and TLC will raise funds for acquisition of <br /> this property will hold a media event on April 13th as a " kick off" to a the <br /> fundraising campaign . Discussion followed of park access , stewardship , <br /> types of recreation , grants , and responsibilities for park maintenance . <br /> Finally, Shaw reviewed recent action by the Board of Commissioners <br /> relative to the Green tract, north of Chapel Hill .
