Adds rsr; �K Ph �� nc : ( 919 ) 245 2597 , Fax : ( 919 ) 644 3351 ,pis, ;v . r; ; %/ / ( ' Memorandum To : Commission for the Environment From : ERCD staff Subject : Proposed Conservation Heroes Award Date : January 25 , 2002 Recognizing that almost 70 % of the contiguous United States is held in private ownership and that future natural area conservation efforts on the part of private individuals will be a significant component of preservation , the Orange County ERCD and the Commission for the Environment have proposed a program that publicly acknowledges significant private endeavors and/or expenditures that contribute to land and resource conservation obj ectives . The following draft is presented for CFE comment . The Conservation Heroes Award would be an annual award that recognizes individuals and organizations that have shown a sustained and outstanding commitment to resource conservation in Orange County . The recipient can be a landowner, board member, If concerned citizen , business , government or private non-profit organization, or any other person or group who has worked towards natural area conservation . There would be three main purposes of the Conservation Heroes Award program : 1 ) to identify and award citizens and organizations who have advanced the cause of natural and cultural resource conservation by their actions , 2 ) publicize conservation options avaidi lable to private landowners and 3 ) improve the understanding between the private sector and county resource conservation agencies , Process Phase 1 ( October 1 ) : Nomination forms would be emailed out by ERCD , posted on website , and posted in the newspaper . A specified due date is stated on forms . Phase 2 ( October 31 ) : Forms are received and compiled on due date .
