Another important
benefit is cleaner air. Some studies have shown that a single tree can
j provide up to $ 62 , 000 worth of pollution control over its 50 year life .
It provides us with an impressive volume of oxygen while taking in
atmospheric carbon . Trees provide an excellent cover to prevent soil
erosion and serve as riparian buffers to keep nutrients and pesticides out
of our streams , improving water quality. Forestlands are the most
affordable and effective source of pollution abatement and control .
How indicator Data on the number of forestland acres was derived from the U . S .
was measured Department of Agriculture — Forest Service .
The trend
i
Wake County is losing forestlands at a much faster rate than the national
and state averages due to increasing population and development . After
in Wake County
Hurricane Fran , there is potential for losing even more forestland if
much of the land that was timbered is not replanted or regenerated .
i
Note : Hurricane Fran destroyed an estimated 75 , 000 trees in Wake
County based on the amount of wood debris hauled away ( and assuming
an average 15 - inch diameter maple or oak tree contains 50 cubic yards
of woody debris ) . This estimate does not take into account Fran trees that
were cut for lumber or fallen trees still on the ground .
The Wake County Technical assistance is provided to private landowners (the largest category
of forestland ownership in Wake County) in an effort to reforest timbered
Government re5pon5e
acres . State and Federal cost share programs aid in this effort by " sharing "
the cost of reforestation with these landowners . This year, in the aftermath of
Hurricane Fran , more than 2 , 000 acres were reforested in the county. This
figure is a 100 percent increase over previous years when forestland in
Wake County was not damaged by major storm systems . Assistance is also
provided to private landowners for the management of their standing
forestland . With the increase in urbanization in Wake County, assistance is
also extended to homeowners and urban communities throughout the
county. Management recommendations are directed toward the landowner 's
or homeowner 's objectives . These objectives may in tree species
selection , screening , timber production , wildlife improvement, sustaining
good water quality, and aesthetics .
27
