From the gas in our <br /> Why indicator <br /> to the manufacturing products of our industry, hazardous materials <br /> was selected <br /> provide the energy and items necessary to support our national economy. <br /> The public and private sectors are continually challenged to find new <br /> and better ways to use, store, and transport hazardous materials . Local <br /> government efforts in Wake County work to distinguish the amounts , <br /> locations , and movement of hazardous materials . Statistics on Wake County <br /> show the importance of this data for public and environmental safety. <br /> How indicator <br /> The Wake County Commodity Flow Study characterizes the movement of <br /> hazardous chemicals observed by shipment in 200 sampling hours . Other <br /> was measured <br /> Study categories ( not shown ) order " top ten " chemical groups by pounds <br /> and gallons . <br /> The trend I Wake County ' s industrial base is large and contains different types of <br /> manufacturing and services . It is a center for pharmaceuticals , electronics , <br /> in Wake County <br /> 1 plastics , computers , agriculture , state administration , and education . In <br /> addition , the Carolina Power & Light Company 's Harris Nuclear Power Plant <br /> is located in Wake County and supplies electrical power for the County and <br /> surrounding areas . it is one of 109 County facilities that report using , <br /> handling, and/or storing Extremely Hazardous Chemicals ( EHS ) . Wake <br /> County expects the growth of new EHS facilities to continue . Currently, the <br /> industry and retail base has a total annual reporting quantity of chemicals <br /> in excess of 3 . 7 billion pounds ( 1993 ) , including Extremely Hazardous <br /> Substances ( EHS ) exceeding 53 million pounds . Eighty percent to <br /> 90 percent of Wake County spills are diesel fuel or petroleum products , <br /> while the remaining spills are chemicals . <br /> The Wake County <br /> Wake County 's transportation system and industrial base pose opportunities <br /> and challenges for environmental safety professionals . Together, business and <br /> Government response ; <br /> government employees work to minimize potential risks to health an envir- <br /> onment . Their efforts include gathering chemical information , training for <br /> hazardous spills, and responding in emergencies . The Commodity Flow <br /> Study enables Wake County to anticipate the most probable type of <br /> hazardous accidents which could occur ; and allows local fire, police , and <br /> rescue agencies to plan and train for a variety of health and safety operations . <br /> 15 <br />
