As a whole , households generate more hazardous <br /> waste than the commercial sector . Irresponsible disposal of these <br /> materials in sanitary landfills , storm drains or septic systems can <br /> eventually pollute our groundwater, streams and lakes . <br /> By tracking the total pounds of household hazardous waste collected <br /> at the County ' s permanent facility, local governments can measure the <br /> success of their educational initiatives to increase public awareness <br /> of responsible purchase , management and disposal of these toxic <br /> materials . <br /> How indicator Monthly, the County ' s contractor for management of its permanent <br /> Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility provides a report that <br /> was measured notes the types and volumes of materials it collects during <br /> the twice - a - month collection days in addition to operational and <br /> disposal costs . Also reported is whether the material was recycled <br /> or landfilled . <br /> `rile trend Wake County ' s permanent Household Hazardous Waste Collection <br /> Facility opened May 18 , 1996 . Through April 1997, a total of 300 , 967 <br /> in Wake County pounds of household hazardous waste was collected . An average of <br /> 300 participants delivered waste each month . On average , 88 percent of the materials are recycled ( this <br /> includes energy recovery by incineration ) .
