The construction of each new house uses land , and <br /> natural and man - made materials . Soil , vegetation , and natural drainage <br /> patterns are disturbed during construction activities such as grading and <br /> moving of materials onto the building site . Buildings and pavement <br /> prevent rainwater from entering the groundwater table . The new residents <br /> will draw on the water supply and will generate wastewater, trash , and <br /> impact the transportation network and air quality. <br /> How indicator I The Wake County Assessor keeps records on all buildings and <br /> was measure <br /> manufactured housing i <br /> d n Wake County. From these records we can <br /> determine the number and type of new residential units built each year. <br /> There are 11 different building types ranging from single-family detached <br /> II� <br /> homes to apartment buildings . <br /> I <br /> The trend I In July 1996 , there were over 215 , 500 residential units in the county. <br /> ' Two-thirds of all county households ( not including group care facilities <br /> in Wake County <br /> and dormitories ) reside in detached single family houses with an average <br /> residential lot size of 0 . 9 acres . Between 1995 and 1996 , 9 , 100 new <br /> residential units were completed , including 7 , 200 new single-family <br /> homes . <br /> HUD estimated that the median price for a house in Wake County was <br /> i <br /> $ 130 , 000 . About half of the new single-family homes built in 1996 fell <br /> at or below the median sales price . A minimum household income of <br /> $ 44 , 600 is needed to purchase a home at this price . While Wake County <br /> median income in 1996 was $ 50 , 700 , the County estimates that 40, 000 <br /> people ( 7 . 4 % of the population ) live below the poverty level . <br /> The Wake County I Wake County recently adopted the Land Use Plan which promotes <br /> growth in and around the municipalities . Wake County administers HUD <br /> Government response g P �' <br /> i <br /> funds to rehabilitate substandard housing and promote construction of <br /> affordable housing . The County has recently established an Affordable <br /> Housing Task Force to address certain housing issues . <br /> 5 <br />
