Wildscape - certified projects must <br /> protect or restore half of the property' s native plants , leaving <br /> enough to protect animals from weather and predators . Urban <br /> sprawl - the extension of suburbs into surrounding areas - has <br /> damaged many habitats , but Stephens says designing developments <br /> differently to incorporate the environment can help solve the <br /> problem . However , labor for a wildscaping project can be more <br /> time -consuming and costly because workers have to guard against <br /> destroying trees or plants . Even so , Stephens says wildscaping <br /> can be profitable for builders . For instance , Mike Ortman ' s <br /> 29 - acre wildscape project cost an added $ 1 , 700 in labor , but the <br /> units quickly sold , lowering the overall cost with a faster <br /> investment return .
