He suggested a cost benefit analysis as a <br /> possible next step . <br /> McIver gave an overview of the Biological Resources Committee work and plans . <br /> The BRC section of the progress report focuses on three areas - a ) improving the availability <br /> of information about the County ' s biological resources , b ) increased protection for biological <br /> areas of concern ( "" indirect protection " ) , and c ) more effective conservation policies <br /> indirect protection " ) . <br /> ➢ Information . <br /> • Update of 1988 Natural Areas Inventory is ongoing . <br /> • Working with NC Natural Heritage Program to develop ways of updating the <br /> Natural Areas Inventory on a more frequent basis . <br /> • GIS work being done to display different forest cover types and to document <br /> changes in forest cover over periods of time . <br /> ➢ Direct Protection : <br /> • Lands Legacy program projects <br /> • Orange and Durham counties purchase of 391 acres Little River Regional Park <br /> & Natural Area ( helps develop partnerships with surrounding entities ) <br /> • Triangle GreenPrint development participation <br /> ➢ Indirect Protection : <br /> • Developing a new Natural Areas Element of the Comprehensive Plan <br /> • Interest in a balanced approach ( incentives and regulations ) to protecting <br /> important resources on private property <br /> • Help people manage and protect private land through education outreach <br /> Discussion included priority items being Natural Areas Element , forest management , and <br /> Environmental Impact Ordinance with staff assistance from Shaw and Decker . <br /> Okun provided an overview for the Water Resources Committee , beginning with the need <br /> to assess the county 's water supply infrastructure using available information , including the <br /> March 2001 report of the Water Resources Committee .
