COUNTY OF ORANGE <br /> COMMISSION FOR THE ENVIRONMENT <br /> Draft Summary of Meeting December 10, 2001 <br /> Held at Orange County Southern Human Services Center, <br /> Chapel Hill , NC <br /> Members Present : Roy Fortmann ( Chair) , Mark Smith , Cara Crisler, Laura Cotterman , Johnny Randall , <br /> Hervey McIver, Dan Okun , Chris Wachholz , Annette Jurgelski and Commissioner Alice Gordon . <br /> Excused Absences . Richard Pratt, Lee Rafalow, Julie Tucker . <br /> Staff Present : David Stancil , ERCD Directors Rich Shaw , Land Conservation Managers Bradley Decker, <br /> ERCD Intern ; Carol Melton ERCD staff. <br /> I . Call to Order <br /> Chair Fortmann called meeting to order at 7 : 35 p . m . <br /> II . Approval of Minutes ( November 12 , 2001 ) <br /> MOTION : Crisler motioned to approve the November 12 minutes . Seconded by Okun . <br /> VOTE : unanimous . <br /> III . Committee Reports <br /> Fortmann noted that a majority of the CFE ' s work is done in the committees , and to receive <br /> input from the whole commission it is important to apprise all the members of each <br /> committee ' s progress . He noted that all projects may not be completed due to limited <br /> resources and time , therefore , prioritization of projects is critical . In order to keep everyone <br /> informed , he called for a group discussion of each committee 's progress and plans for the <br /> upcoming year and asked for an estimate of staff needs . <br /> Crisler gave an overview of the EIE Committee work and plans : <br /> ➢ Develop proposal for public education plan and campaign <br /> • To better inform citizens as well as visitors and workers without a county <br /> residency on environmental issues that concern county leaders . <br /> • Develop pocket folder of information such as air and water quality , soil erosion , <br /> storm water runoff, horticulture , recycling , land preservation , etc . <br /> • This information might also be included as links on the CFE website . <br /> • Would like to see funding set aside for this project . <br /> • Provide more community awareness/ presence and recruit volunteers for <br /> subcommittees . For example , setting up informational booth at community <br /> functions such as Apple Chill , Hog Day , and Autumn Moon Festival . <br /> Members discussed the CFE website and asked if a staff person could update . Stancil noted <br /> that ERCD ' s GIS Technician could provide support in this area . The question was raised of <br /> what the message should be conveyed at a booth . For example , should it include <br /> information from lath ERCD and CFE ? The group brainstormed on ideas for the booth and <br /> asked for staff support in this area .
