<br />Whereas, volunteers are an invaluable asset to Orange County departments and agencies and <br />their service contributes to the cost effectiveness and efficiency of government operations; and, <br /> <br />Whereas, the involvement of volunteers has strengthened and reinforced the democratic <br />process by volunteers contributing their time to help address community challenges; and, <br /> <br />Whereas, during April the Orange County Board of County Commissioners will show its <br />appreciation to its dedicated volunteers by presenting each with a gift, <br /> <br />Now, therefore, let it be resolved that the Orange County Board of Commissioners sincerely <br />thanks its volunteers for their community spirit, expertise, dedication and commitment to the <br />residents of Orange County and hereby recognizes the week of April 17th through April 23rd, <br />2005 as <br />VOLUNTEER WEEK IN ORANGE COUNTY <br /> <br />This the 19th day of April 2005 <br /> <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> <br />c. Asian Pacific American History Month <br />The Board considered proclaiming the month of May 2005 as Asian Pacific American <br />History Month and authorizing the Chair to sign. <br />Human Rights and Relations Director Milan Pham said that she is also Chair and President <br />of Advocacy for North Carolina Asian Pacific Americans and she is also Asian American <br />resident of Vietnamese descent. She introduced some North Carolina leaders of the Asian <br />Pacific American community. She invited the County Commissioners to attend the first <br />statewide conference on May 21st from 8:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Southern Human Services <br />Center. This will be in conjunction will several other national partners, in California and <br />Washington, DC. There will be formal invitations. She read the proclamation. <br />A motion was made by Commissioner Halkiotis, seconded by Commissioner Jacobs to <br />proclaim the month of May 2005 as Asian Pacific American History Month and authorize the <br />Chair to sign. <br /> <br />ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />Asian Pacific American History Month Proclamation <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Asian Pacific Americans constitute a large and growing portion of the United <br />States, North Carolina and Orange County population with the Triangle as a gateway for Asian <br />American emigration and immigration; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Asian Pacific Americans played important roles in the Civil Rights <br />Movement, the Labor Movement, the Women’s Suffrage Movement and every other movement <br />for progressive social change; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Asian Pacific Americans across the United States went to bed hungry, lost <br />land to the tax collector, worked to exhaustion and ill-health, faced pain and relocation, blasted <br />the tunnels for the railroad, stooped over the short-handled hoe, and fought for a democracy <br />that did not include them; and
