i •
Wastewater Flow Analysis
Chestnut Ridge Camp and Retreat Center
Purpose
The purpose of this report is to determine if a proposed cottage may be connected to an
existing onsite wastewater system at the Chestnut Ridge Camp and Retreat Center
without overloading the wastewater system.
Backparound
Chestnut Ridge Camp and Retreat Center consists of cabins for camping and temporary
lodging, a swimming pool and bathhouse, a kitchen and dining hall, and other supporting
facilities located in western Orange County, NC. All wastewater service for the camp is
provided by onsite wastewater systems, some of which are small systems for individual
buildings. A large onsite LPP system serves the kitchen, dining hall, bathhouse, and a
number of camping buildings. This system consists of septic tanks, grease tra ction
sewers, a central pumping station which doses effluent to an open sand filter, and a , r
second pump station that doses treated effluent to the LPP distribution field. This large
onsite system is permitted for 2,850 gallons per day(gpd) of wastewater loading. The
system is regulated by the Orange County Health Department, and is supervised by David
Brantley and Sons, a certified wastewater system operator.
Wastewater generation for the LPP system consists of domestic waste from commercial-
grade kitchen activities, bathhouse usage, restroom fixtures, and normal cleaning
activities. Weekday activities during summer camping season appear to generate the most
intensive wastewater loading conditions. At other times of the year, the camp hosts
various types of gatherings, conferences, retreats, and other activities. Most of these
include use of the kitchen and dining facilities. The swimming pool is open only during
the summer months, so bathhouse usage is minimal during other times of the year.
Proposed Cottaue Characteristics
The proposed cottage is a small two-bedroom structure used intermittently by visiting
pastors and their families for short durations. The cottage will be provided with a small
kitchen,but only adr-
ited am of cooking is expected by occupants because the
onsite dining facilities will generally bq open and available for most meals. The general
context of how the cottage will be used suggests that average daily w eas water generation
from cottage activities will be relatively small.
2
289
