Piedmont Wildlife Center at Camp Chestnut Ridge
2/28/2003
The Piedmont Wildlife Center(PWC)is in negotiations with Camp Chestnut Ridge to locate on
their property and use buildings already in existence. Both entities share a common mission and
vision of teaching respect for the environment and life. PWC would use the"Mebane Cab&(see
(15)on site plan)and tent camp sites 4 and 5 (see(27)and(28)on site plan)for rehabilitation.
Each camp site contains 2 huts which will be used for flight cages for birds(pictures included)-
The site plan includes an addition to the Mebane Cabin to make room for an x-ray developer, a
washer and dryer,a refrigerator and a chest freezer. Due to space restrictions the rehabilitation
would be restricted to severely injured small mammals, and reptiles, but to include all binds. The
Mebane Cabin will be the primary rehabilitation center and nursery- This is where intensive rare
and feeding will occur. The sites 4 and 5 will be for pre release string Wight cages. The
annals that are self sufficient will be housed here and will fly inside these structures until their
release time. The volume would be light;the fecal waste minimal. The animals being rehabilitated
would be primarily songbirds (most weighing an ounce or two,and producing minuscule amounts
of feces. The cages will be cleaned by removing soiled newspaper and taking it to the dump, so
minimal impact would occur on the surrounding land. It is probable that there would be fewer than
60 animals at a given time at the center. Mammals would be stabilized and shipped to area
rehabilitatoos. Songbirds would be kept at the center until ready to release. Birds of prey would be
treated, stabilized and sent to the Charlotte Raptor Centcr. Rarely would there be more than 10
pounds of animals being cared for at a time. The waste generated from 10 pounds of life is not
much. This is not comparable to a boarding facility for cats and dogs where waste can be
measured in pounds not grams, and where hosing is necessary instead of hand washing.
As for the people working there,we will have 2 staff members there at a time and possibly
2 volunteers at a time. Howl of operation are daylight hours. We are not planning to sell
anything. Educational programs will be done through the Morris Center which is already used for
this capacity. 1t should be noted that the children will not be allowed in the facility with the
animals. Our center will provide educational opportunities for the campers attending Camp
Chestnut Ridge. These will be held outside or in the Morris Center. The activities of the ramp will
keep the children away from the PWC except when attending a class.
Please see enclosed pictures for description of the Mebane cabin and huts.
Sincerely,
Dr.Bobby Schopler,Director of the Piedmont Wildlife Center
(919)304-6657(h) or(919)360-0746 (c)
246
