Health Director’s Report
November 2018

• November 5-6, 2018 – First North Carolina FIT Program Convening at UNC Family
Medicine; OCHD hosted the Transitions Clinic Network, national partners from
California. We were able to discuss best practice and possible initiatives for the Orange
County FIT program.
• November 5-6, 2018 – Health Department responded to OWASA water main break in
Chapel Hill/Carrboro Area; Environmental Health and Communications Manager joined
me in working in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and the Joint Information
Center (JIC) for this incident. OCHD worked closely with OWASA to inform affected
establishments (restaurants, schools, hotels, etc) about the boil water advisory. Water
pressure increased by the end of day 1, so we did not have to issue a “Do Not Use, Do
Not Drink Order.”
• November 12, 2018 – OCHD participated in a debrief with OWASA about the water
main break incident; Carrboro Chamber, Chapel Hill elected officials, UNC School &
Hospital representatives and several business owners were in attendance to discuss the
response. The group shared concerns with future maintenance of the aging water system
and plans to mitigate future water main breaks. The last disruption had a significant
impact on all, but especially the UNC system. Feedback about communications was very
positive. The community felt all involved implemented lessons learned from the February
2017 water incident. While we identified opportunities for continued improvement, it was
good to know that we are headed in the right direction.
• November 13 -16, 2018 – Completed Week 2 of the Municipal and County
Administration Course at School of Government.

Upcoming Events
• December 5, 2018 – Annual Holiday Breakfast and All Staff Meeting
• REI Groundwater Presentation – December 4th at Whitted Human Services; 5:30-8:30pm.
• January 24-25, 2019 – Public Health Leaders Conference (formerly known as Annual
Health Director’s Conference) in Raleigh, NC
