1
ORANGE C
NORTH CAROLINA
COUNTY MANAGER'S OFFICE
200 South Cameron Street Bonnie B. Hammersley,County Manager Phone(919) 245-2300
Post Office Box 8181 Fax(919)644-3004
Hillsborough, North Carolina 27278
To: Board of Commissioners
From: Todd McGee, Community Relations Director
Subject: County Government Academy for Orange County Residents
Date: December 3, 2018
The Orange County Government Academy (CGA) is held each spring to educate
residents about the services and responsibilities of Orange County Government. The
program benefits Orange County by creating a pool of informed residents who would be
more likely to serve on one of the many Orange County volunteer boards and advisory
committees.
The CGA was begun in February 2018. The class meets for eight weeks from February
through June. The course includes tours of county facilities such as the Animal Shelter,
the Emergency Operations Center and 911 Center, the Passmore Senior Center and
the Solid Waste Recycling and Convenience Center, as well as presentations from
department heads. Classes are held from 6-8 p.m. the first and third Tuesdays of each
month, beginning Feb. 19 and running through June 4.
The course will begin with a County Government 101 class taught by Kara Millonzi of
the School of Government at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. This year's
class will also feature a mock commissioner's budget meeting where participants will
receive budget presentations from county departments and adopt a county budget.
The class is open to county residents 16 and older. No fee is charged to attend the
class, and participation is limited to 30 students. Classroom sessions are held at
Durham Technical Community College's Hillsborough campus at no cost to the county.
An Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer
www.orangecountync.gov
