ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: May 17, 2005
Action Ages a+
Item No.
SUBJECT: Bid Award: Self Propelled Front Mount Street Broom for Landfill
DEPARTMENT: Purchasing & Solid Waste PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No
Management
ATTACHMENT(S):
Tabulation
INFORMATION CONTACT:
Pam Jones, 245-2652
Gayle Wilson, 968-2885
TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough 732-8181
Chapel Hill 968-4501
Durham 688-7331
Mebane 336-227-2031
PURPOSE: To consider awarding a contract far the purchase of a Self Propelled Front Mount
Street Broom from Interstate Equipment Company of Cary, North Carolina, for use at the
Orange County Landfill.
BACKGROUND: The number of paved roads at the Orange County Landfill has increased
over the last few years and will continue to increase as the new constnaction and demolition
(C&D) landfill is completed. Gravel, mud and debris are an increasing problem and decrease
the life cycle of the asphalt and concrete, Additionally, mud and debris are occasionally tracked
out onto Eubanks Road, This machine will allow Landfill staff to maintain, at a much higher
level of effectiveness and at a decreased cost, all paved roads at the Landfill,
The unit specified is self-propelled with the rotary broom that is mounted to the front of the
machine, The front mounted design is anticipated to reduce the wear and tear on the broom,
which should save several hundred dollars each year in broom replacement costs. In addition,
the front-mount design will provide better protection to the front axle since the debris and gravel
will be swept away before it lodges under the vehicle. The bid was posted on the County's
website in addition to being mailed to five vendors. One company, Interstate Equipment
Company of Cary, North Carolina responded, with a delivered cost of $35,369.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The purchase price of the street broom is $35,369, Sufficient funds
were allocated within the FY 2004-2005 Solid Waste budget to purchase the piece of
equipment outright,
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board award the bid to
Interstate Equipment Company of Cary, North Carolina at a cost of $35,369 and authorize the
Purchasing Director to execute the necessary paperwork.
