People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) often lead lives that have
limited opportunities for social inclusion and participation. Restricted and sedentary lifestyles
significantly reduce the quality of life. Funding for these programs will go directly to coordinate and
monitor activities that enable people with I/DD to become engaged with the community through the use
of community volunteers, spaces and resources. This is consistent with the Chapel Hill, Carrboro and
Orange County town goals of Creating a Place for Everyone and Nurturing Our Community.
Community programs are important for teens and adults with I/DD because there are fewer
opportunities once adults age out of the school system. Furthermore, people with I/DD have statistically
higher rates of unemployment as well as limited choices in continuing education. Individuals with I/DD
can and should be contributing members of the community in all aspects of their lives. Our community
programs help to meet those needs.
The Arc's community programs, supported employment and individual services have many
components that are educational, social, and community driven in nature demonstrating that healthy
lives are happy lives and happy lives are purposeful lives. Our community programs (Community
Connections Partnership Program, Triangle Self-Advocacy Network, Cooking & Nutrition Class,
HOOPs basketball, and Petals with a Purpose) are staffed by volunteers allowing the programs to be
cost effective. Not having to pay for an instructor or teacher to lead our programs considerably cuts
down on the cost of the programs, not to mention showcasing and using the talented, creative and
enthusiastic local neighborhood volunteers who contribute to making our community a better place for
everyone.
An important by-product of our participants enjoying and being seen in the community as capable and
contributing members of society is that our community's perception of a person with I/DD is elevated
and changed for the better. This results in forming positive impressions and mutually beneficial
relationships with the community. By educating the business community when there is a job opening or
a volunteer opportunity these opportunities are equally extended to someone with a disability as would
be their typical peer. This builds stronger communities, fosters equality, and diminishes bullying and
prejudices.
Community Connections is a program that matches a volunteer from our community with a participant
(teen or adult with I/DD). The volunteer and participant spend time together each month, enjoying
recreational and leisure activities. This is a time to learn new skills, grow as individuals, and to get to
know each other as the partner becomes more socially involved in the community.
Cooking & Nutrition Class teaches culinary skills in a hands-on kitchen setting. It encourages good
nutrition choices and demonstrates working together as a team. In an effort to teach giving back to the
community, once a month the class bakes and donates desserts to the local Meals on Wheels
program. The recipes made in class are simple enough to be made at home allowing our individuals to
lead healthier lives with better and proper nutrition once they leave the classroom.
Arc HOOPS participants shoot some hoops, learn new skills, the rules of the game, get a good workout
all while having fun. The coach's goal is to increase participation of women; grow the program by
organizing teams and tournaments and create HOOPS uniforms.
HOPE Community Gardens is a valuable and free food resource for individuals with I/DD. Arc
participants and volunteers maintain the gardens and can bring home fresh organic food. Much of the
food grown is delivered to local food pantries and to the senior center, so others in need in our
community can enjoy eating locally grown food.
Triangle Self Advocacy Network [TSAN] is a self-advocacy group that meets monthly. The group
elects its own officers, contributes to the agenda, and handles most of its own responsibilities. Past
topics of discussion have included fire safety, hurricane preparedness, relationships, finances, and
planning group outings to the North Carolina State Fair.
Petals with a Purpose participants, volunteers, and community partners gather together in the
PROGRAM INFORMATION 1/20/2018 3:58:40 PM Page 15 of 24
