Memorandum to BOCC
June 23, 2004
Page 2
Mt. Herman Church Road is listed as a secondary priority bicycle route in the
Orange County Bicycle Plan.
Mt. Herman Church Road is not classified as a thoroughfare in the Hillsborough
Transportation Plan. Mt. Herman Church Road is also classified as major
thoroughfare in the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Area
thoroughfare plan study dated September 1996. It is important to note that the
thoroughfare plan was never adopted by the Transportation Advisory Committee.
The recommended cross section is a two-lane shoulder section. Seventy feet is
adequate for the proposed two 12-ft. travel lanes with 4' paved shoulders for
bicycles. There are no improvements planned for this section of Mr. Herman
Church Road.
The 1999 and 2001 average annual daily traffic calculated for Old NC 10 (west of
Mt. Herman Church Road) is 2,300. Current capacity for Old NC 10 (level of
service D) is approximately 12,000.
ao
