ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: August 17, 2004 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. R- <br />SUBJECT: Contract Approval: Southern Orange Senior Center Architect <br />DEPARTMENT: Purchasing and Central PUBLIC HEARING: (YIN) No <br />Services <br />ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Pam Jones, (919) 245-2652 <br />Cost Proposal <br />TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough 732-8181 <br />Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br />Durham 688-7331 <br />Mebane 336-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To consider accepting the recommendation of the Southern Orange Senior Center <br />Architect Selection Panel; and approving a contract with Gurlitz Architects, Durham, North <br />Carolina. <br />BACKGROUND: Proposals were received from nine (9) firms interested in providing design <br />services for the Southern Orange Senior Center to be constructed on the County's Homestead <br />Road Campus, The Architect Selection Panel met on Monday August 2 to review the proposals <br />and prepare a list of firms that were candidates for interview, The Architect Selection Panel <br />included: Ann Johnson, Peachy Wicker, Nate Davis, Don Willhoit, representing the Southern <br />Orange Senior Center Planning Committee, as well as, Commissioners Halkiotis and Gordon <br />and County staff, John Link, Gwen Harvey, Paul Thames, Jerry Passmore, Janice Tyler and <br />Pam Janes. <br />The Panel opted to interview DTW Architects and Gurlitz Architects from Durham and two <br />Raleigh firms, Jill B, Smith Architect and Innovative Design. While each of the firms was well <br />qualified to design the proposed senior center, Gurlitz Architects received the Panel's <br />recommendation. <br />Gurlitz Architects has designed several projects related in scope and flmction to the County's <br />project, including, but not limited to: Carolina Meadows Recreation Center, the Durham Center <br />for Senior Life, which has been bid recently and is scheduled for completion in 2005, and the <br />existing Chapel Hill Senior Center at the Galleria in Chapel Hill. <br />In addition to Gurlitz Architects, the design team will include: Margaret Calkins/gerontology <br />consultant, Coulter Jewell Thames, PA/t_andscape Architecture and Site Engineering; Stroud, <br />
