2
New Hope Creek and Steep Bottom Branch. Some places, such as the Lloyd- Andrews
Historic Farm and Steep Bottom Branch, are protected by conservation easements held by
Orange County, the Triangle Land Conservancy or the Conservation Trust of North Carolina.
A Question and Answer document produced by the North Carolina Department of
Transportation is attached as background regarding the North Carolina Scenic Byway
program. The program allows visitors and residents to experience North Carolina history,
geography and culture and the chance to see beautiful landscapes. Development or land -
use is not regulated by the Byway designation. There are two existing Scenic Byways in
Orange County — the "Colonial Heritage Highway" (NC 86 north of Hillsborough) and
"Football Road" (Old Greensboro Road west of Carrboro).
The NTA Advisory Board has requested the support of Orange County for its application to
the state. The final application is due by August 31.
On July 28, the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) considered the application and
recommended that the County support this effort. A letter of support from the HPC is
attached.
A proposed resolution of County support for the application is attached for the Board's
consideration. It would be attached to the application as an appendix.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None. There is no cost associated with the application other than
staff time involved in helping prepare materials.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the resolution
of support and authorize the Chair to sign on behalf of Orange County.
