EXISTINGROADWAYNETWORK <br />Theprojectarea(showninFigure1)isapproximately4.25squaremilesboundedonthewestbyBen <br />WilsonRoad,ontheeastbyTheIͲ85/USͲ70Connector,onthenorthbyUSͲ70,andonthesouthbyWest <br />TenRoadandBowmanRoad.Thearealiesbetweentwomunicipalities,MebaneandHillsborough.A <br />descriptionofthetransportationfacilitiesinthegeneralvicinityoftheprojectstudyareaisasfollows: <br />IͲ40/IͲ85isaneightͲlaneinterstatethatrunsconcurrentlythroughGuilford,Alamance,andOrange <br />Counties.IͲ40divergesfromIͲ85atexit163southofHillsborough.Thepostedspeedlimitis65mphand <br />theAADTis98,000vehicles/day. <br />BenWilsonRoadisatwoͲlanemajorconnectorwhichisaccessedfromtheMebaneOaksRoad <br />interchangeonIͲ85/40andcarriesmainlyresidentialtraffic.Itwasrecentlyextendedtoactasaservice <br />roadforemployeesofMorinagaAmericaFoods,Inc.TheextensionofBenWilsonRoadtoMebaneOaks <br />Roadhasbeenstudied,howeverplanshavenotbeenapprovedandwillnotbediscussedinthisreport. <br />Thepostedspeedlimitis35mph. <br />WestTenRoadisatwoͲlanemajorconnectorsouthofIͲ40/IͲ85whichrunsfromMattressFactoryRoad <br />totheIͲ85Connector.Thepostedspeedlimitis55mph,exceptfora45mphsectionnearGravellyHill <br />MiddleSchool,andtheAADTis1,800vehicles/day. <br />MattressFactoryRoadisatwoͲlanemajorconnectorthatisnorthofIͲ40/85whichrunsfromEast <br />WashingtonStreet(SR1303)toWestTenRoad,intersectingatIͲ40/85.Thepostedspeedlimitis35mph <br />andtheAADTis2,500vehicles/day. <br />BuckhornRoadisatwoͲlanemajorconnectorstretchingfromUSͲ70inthenorthtoOrangeGroveRoad <br />(SR1006)inthesouth.Withinthestudyarea,i.e.fromUSͲ70toWestTenRoad,BuckhornRoadhasa <br />postedspeedof35mphandtheAADTis2,700vehicles/day. <br />US70isatwoͲlaneroadclassifiedasanOtherPrincipalArterial,whichprovideseastͲwestaccessacross <br />OrangeCountyfromIͲ85andDurhamintheeasttoMebaneinthewest.USͲ70representsthenorthern <br />boundaryofthestudyarea.Thepostedspeedlimitis45mphandtheAADTisbetween3,600and5,300 <br />vehicles/day. <br />IͲ85/USͲ70ConnectorisafourͲlaneinterstateprovidingaccessbetweenIͲ40/IͲ85andUSͲ70.Afull <br />accessinterchangeisprovidedatIͲ40/IͲ85,whileapartialaccessinterchangeispresentatUSͲ70.The <br />partialaccessinterchangerestrictswestboundtravelontoUS70fromtheIͲ85/USͲ70Connectorand <br />southboundtravelfromUSͲ70ontotheIͲ85/USͲ70Connector.Thepostedspeedlimitis55mphandthe <br />AADTis4,400vehicles/day. <br />9 <br />68
