ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> PROCLAMATION <br /> HONORING JAKI SHELTON GREEN, NORTH CAROLINA POET LAUREATE <br /> WHEREAS, Jaki Shelton Green, a native and current resident of Orange County, North <br /> Carolina, has established herself as a renowned poet, creative writing teacher and community <br /> arts advocate; and <br /> WHEREAS, Jaki has authored eight books of poetry, co-edited two poetry anthologies, and <br /> written one play; and <br /> WHEREAS, in 2003,Jaki received the North Carolina Award for Literature; and <br /> WHEREAS, in 2014,Jaki was inducted into the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame; and <br /> WHEREAS, Governor Roy Cooper has selected Jaki Shelton Green as the 2018 North <br /> Carolina Poet Laureate; and <br /> WHEREAS, Jaki is the first African-American and the third woman to receive this high honor <br /> as NC Poet Laureate; and <br /> WHEREAS, as the North Carolina Poet Laureate, Jaki will serve as the ambassador of poetry <br /> and the spoken word for the state; and <br /> WHEREAS, Orange County is proud to honor its residents and their accomplishments; <br /> NOW THEREFORE, the Orange County Board of Commissioners hereby proclaims <br /> November 1, 2018 as: <br /> JAKI SHELTON GREEN DAY <br /> in recognition of her remarkable talents in the field of literature, and in acknowledgement of <br /> her outstanding contributions to humanity. <br /> Proclaimed this lst day of November 2018. <br /> Mark Dorosin, air <br /> Orange County Board of Commissioners <br /> i <br />
