6 <br /> <br /> <br />WHEREAS, nearly 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have experienced severe physical violence by <br />an intimate partner in their lifetimes; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, too often, the victims of domestic violence are children who have lifelong <br />repercussions from the emotional and physical trauma of experiencing or witnessing domestic <br />violence; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October provides us with a special <br />opportunity to advance our efforts to prevent and end domestic violence and to assist all victims <br />of it; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, one person can make a huge difference in the life of a child or an adult victim of <br />domestic violence, helping them find safety and making them more resilient to the effects of <br />domestic violence; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, each year, non-profit organizations, County staff, and others contribute a multitude <br />of hours year to addressing domestic violence issues and assisting victims, and are often the <br />people who make a difference in the lives of families, abusers seeking services, and victims <br />seeking support during medical assessment or legal proceedings; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, we can all do one thing to help end domestic violence and the harm that it causes; <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, <br />do hereby proclaim the month of October 2018 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in <br />Orange County. <br /> <br />This the 16th day of October, 2018. <br /> <br />A motion was made by Commissioner Burroughs, seconded by Commissioner Price for <br />the Board to approve the proclamation designating October 2018 as “Domestic Violence <br />Awareness Month” in Orange County and authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation. <br /> <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> <br />Cordelia Heaney thanked the Board of County Commissioners for their ongoing support <br />for the Compass Center. <br /> <br />c. Proclamation Recognizing Katherine Cheek: MOVED TO ITEM 8-l <br />The Board considered voting to approve a proclamation recognizing and expressing <br />gratitude to Katherine “Kat” Thompson Wilkerson-Cheek for her devotion and service to the <br />people of Orange County. <br /> <br />d. Reduce Single Use Plastics Month & Skip the Straw Month Proclamation <br />The Board considered voting to approve a proclamation declaring October 2018 as <br />“Reduce Single Use Plastics Month” and declaring March 2019 as “Skip the Straw Month” and <br />authorize the Chair to sign. <br /> Robert Williams, Solid Waste Director, introduced Bruce Woody, new Assistant Director. <br />He then presented this item. <br />
