6 <br /> 1 WHEREAS, Domestic Violence is a pattern of control in an intimate relationship where one <br /> 2 person uses coercion and violence to gain power and control over his or her partner; and <br /> 3 <br /> 4 WHEREAS, victims of domestic violence can be of any age, race, religion, or economic status; <br /> 5 and <br /> 6 <br /> 7 WHEREAS, nearly 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have experienced severe physical violence by <br /> 8 an intimate partner in their lifetimes; and <br /> 9 <br /> 10 WHEREAS, too often, the victims of domestic violence are children who have lifelong <br /> 11 repercussions from the emotional and physical trauma of experiencing or witnessing domestic <br /> 12 violence; and <br /> 13 <br /> 14 WHEREAS, Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October provides us with a special <br /> 15 opportunity to advance our efforts to prevent and end domestic violence and to assist all victims <br /> 16 of it; and <br /> 17 <br /> 18 WHEREAS, one person can make a huge difference in the life of a child or an adult victim of <br /> 19 domestic violence, helping them find safety and making them more resilient to the effects of <br /> 20 domestic violence; and <br /> 21 <br /> 22 WHEREAS, each year, non-profit organizations, County staff, and others contribute a multitude <br /> 23 of hours year to addressing domestic violence issues and assisting victims, and are often the <br /> 24 people who make a difference in the lives of families, abusers seeking services, and victims <br /> 25 seeking support during medical assessment or legal proceedings; and <br /> 26 <br /> 27 WHEREAS, we can all do one thing to help end domestic violence and the harm that it causes; <br /> 28 <br /> 29 NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, <br /> 30 do hereby proclaim the month of October 2018 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in <br /> 31 Orange County. <br /> 32 <br /> 33 This the 16th day of October, 2018. <br /> 34 <br /> 35 A motion was made by Commissioner Burroughs, seconded by Commissioner Price for <br /> 36 the Board to approve the proclamation designating October 2018 as "Domestic Violence <br /> 37 Awareness Month" in Orange County and authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation. <br /> 38 <br /> 39 VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> 40 <br /> 41 Cordelia Heaney thanked the Board of County Commissioners for their ongoing support <br /> 42 for the Compass Center. <br /> 43 <br /> 44 c.
