Proclamation Declaring October 2018 as Dysautonomia Awareness Month <br /> 11 The Board considered voting to adopt a proclamation declaring October 2018 as <br /> 12 Dysautonomia Awareness Month and authorizing the Chair to sign. <br /> 13 <br /> 14 BACKGROUND: <br /> 15 Miranda Harris, an Orange High School student, recently submitted a letter requesting that the <br /> 16 Board of Commissioners consider approving a proclamation declaring October 2018 as <br /> 17 Dysautonomia Awareness Month. Ms. Harris' request is provided at Attachment 1. <br /> 18 <br /> 19 Dysautonomia is a group of medical conditions that result in a malfunction of the autonomic <br /> 20 nervous system, which is responsible for"automatic" bodily functions such as respiration, heart <br /> 21 rate, blood pressure, digestion, temperature control and more. Some forms of dysautonomia <br /> 22 are considered rare diseases, such as Multiple System Atrophy and Pure Autonomic Failure, <br /> 23 while other forms of dysautonomia are common, impacting millions of people in the US and <br /> 24 around the world, such as Diabetic Autonomic Neuropathy, Neurocardiogenic Syncope and <br /> 25 Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome.
