Announcements, Petitions and Comments by Board Members <br />Commissioner Jacobs asked if the meeting with Chapel Hill had been rescheduled. <br />Bonnie Hammersley said she and Donna Baker are working with the Chapel Hill Town <br />Manager on possible dates. <br />Commissioner Jacobs asked if the “environmental impacts” will be added to the meeting <br />agendas going forward. <br />Commissioner Rich said this has not been talked about in agenda review. <br />Bonnie Hammersley said her recollection was that it was not determined yet, but she <br />would do research. <br />Commissioner Jacobs said Commissioner Marcoplos made the request, and the Board <br />agreed. <br />Commissioner McKee arrived at 7:08 p.m. <br />Commissioner Burroughs said there was an article about the Camelot Apartments, <br />which encouraged people to donate to the Friends of the Department of Social Services (DSS). <br />She asked if the Board has a role in contributing from the social justice fund to these residents <br />who suffered hurricane damage. She said she would like to know the extent of the problem, <br />and if there is a role for the County. <br />Bonnie Hammersley said staff will be report on the hurricane event at the October 16th <br />meeting, and can address this issue at that time. <br />Commissioner Price said she was also going to address that issue. She said she <br />contacted Orange Congregations in Missions (OCIM) to determine the situation in Orange <br />County, and she found out that there were evacuees from the east coast living in this area for a <br />time. She listed items that were needed. She said some evacuees are being moved from <br />shelter to shelter in other counties, which is sad. <br />Bonnie Hammersley said she would work with the Emergency Services director on that. <br />Commissioner Price said there is a Suicide Prevention walk in Gold Park tomorrow night <br />at 6:30 p.m. <br />Commissioner Price petitioned to proclaim October Dysautonomia Awareness Month, as <br />requested by an Orange High School student. <br />Commissioner Rich said it is on the October 16th agenda. <br />Commissioner Price petitioned to recognize Jaki Shelton Green as the North Carolina <br />Poet Laureate. <br />Commissioner Marcoplos said while watching the hurricane last week, he wondered <br />about the Board’s ability to really impact climate change, and he read a comment from the <br />United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Gutierrez: “If we do not change course by 2020, we <br />risk missing the point where we can avoid runaway climate change.
