He said there is a fire station on St. Mary’s road, but it has no firefighters and has <br />been empty for 10 years. He asked if the Board would look into saving historical sites such as <br />gristmills around the Town of Hillsborough. He said there are no regulations in Orange County <br />to protect historical items that reside on private property. He said the County needs do a better <br />job of funding their schools. He asked if the Board would notify him about the flag issue, as he <br />has no phone or Internet. <br />Chair Dorosin asked if he would give his contact information to the Clerk and staff will be <br />in touch. <br />Jamie Paulen said she supported the Board’s comments on the removal of the Silent <br />Sam statue. <br />Bill Ward said he is a member of Commission for the Environment, but he is speaking for <br />himself. He said the board passed a resolution in 2017 about renewable energy sources. He <br />said much has happened to mitigate climate change, including joining the Global Covenant of <br />Mayors for Climate and Energy, and beginning the greenhouse gas inventory. He said two of <br />the biggest contributors to the greenhouse gases are public transportation and utilities. He <br />gave examples of ways cities and countries are addressing these concerns, such as battery <br />operated boats and electric vehicles. Announcements, Petitions and Comments by Board Members <br />Commissioner Price commended those that put on, and participate in, summer youth <br />programs throughout the County. <br />Commissioner Burroughs said the Family Success Alliance’s (FSA) second major <br />funder, the United Way, has delayed the reapplication process until the spring, but will continue <br />to fund the FSA. <br />Commissioner Burroughs said the Board has been invited to the FSA strategic planning, <br />and she gave a shout out to Commissioner Marcoplos who spent two full days participating in <br />this process. <br />Commissioner Rich said the Food Council continues to work on several projects such as <br />promoting and preserving food waste in Orange County. She thanked farmer Ken Larsen, who <br />rolled off the Council. <br />Commissioner Rich said the Visitor’s Bureau (VB) is trying to think of ways to collaborate <br />with the Chapel Hill VB, rather than duplicating efforts. <br />Commissioner Rich said she is on a group called WE POWER, who is a group of women <br />out of the Piedmont Food Processing Center, trying to empower women entrepreneurs in the <br />food business. <br />Commissioner Rich said she just moved into a new home along with her mom, and she <br />contacted the Department on Aging to assess the home’s readiness for an aging individual. <br />She said the Department suggested changes, and she highly recommended this service to <br />anyone that has an aging individual in their home.
