~ENEIt,AI. DESCRIPTION OP SITE <br />The properties being inventoried aze located in Cheeks Township, Orange County, North <br />Cazolina on the north side of West Ten Road between Bucichom Road and Mt, Willing Road. <br />The total acreage included in the inventory is 66,868 acres, which includes three tractsto Lonnie <br />46.983 acres belonging to Owen and Mabel Allison and a 19, 885-acre tract belonging <br />anal Karen Daniel.. Interstate 85-40 borders the site on the north, a 34..360-acre tract whi9h~ as <br />cleaz cut about 2 years ago borders on the east, and on the west aze three tracts totaling <br />containing two home sites and woodlands. The southern half' of the gently rolling ~~ four <br />primarily open field with some fruit trees, an approximately half-acre blueberry p g, <br />building sites and two ponds, There is also a 5,83-acre patch oenwmoe dlanT~he northern half f the <br />comer and woodlands bordering the creek along the western p <br />site is wooded except for a power line right-of--way that cuts across the northwest comer.. <br />Contained in the woodlands aze wetlands with vernal pools in the northeastern sector and a small <br />stream, tributary to Four Mile Branch; that flows southwest across the upper northwest comer of <br />the site, This small stream then flows off the site and empties into Four Mile Branch which <br />parallels the western edge and enters the site to flow southeast across the southwest comer where <br />it leaves the site. <br />HABTTAT/SPECIES DIVEItsrry <br />This approximately 67-acre site exhibits a high degree of diversity for a relatively small area, A <br />c~eated and ma atained, nbaiural wetlandstand n total woodlandsuped into three types: human <br />Human created and maintained habitats include: <br />L Open Fiel eaz3mund 1 6-acre pond and a smalleran26 acre pond, whi h becomes dry <br />2 Ponds, a y <br />during long periods without rain; <br />3 Power Line Right-of-Way, a .67-acre power line cut which bisects the oak-hickory <br />forest at the northwestern corner of the site; <br />4, Ephemeral Marsh, a .47-acre open wetland situated in a clearing within the forest <br />canopy in the mid-northern portion of the site, <br />32 <br />Natural wetland habitats include: <br />5. Four Mile Branch (flows through the Piedmont/Low Mountain Alluvial Forest) and <br />its tributary (flows through the Basic Mesic Piedmont Forest; <br />6. Vernal pools within the LTpland Depression Swamp Forest. <br />Natural woodland habitats include: <br />7. Pine Forest; <br />g Dry pak-Hickory Forest; <br />9, Upland Depression Swamp Forest; <br />10, Basic Mesic Piedmont Forest; <br />11. Piedmont/l.ow Mountain Alluvial Forest. <br />2 <br />
