How does funding this
program add value to the community? (250 words OR LESS)
WCOM is the only radio station devoted to serving southern Orange County and the
only broadcast media outlet in Carrboro.
We offer a number of radio programs produced by local African-American
programmers and featuring music rooted in African-American traditions. We offer
locally produced Spanish language programs. This provides diverse voices of the
community unavailable elsewhere.
Through WCOM the Public Galley of Carrboro offers an open platform for PSAs from
local non-profits throughout our offerings. The "Time Out" program on Mondays at
5PM provides in depth and thought interviews with important people in our
community, including annual visits by Congressman David Price, a series of
interviews with Town of Carrboro department heads, and regular appearances by
former Carrboro mayor and State Senator Ellie Kinaird. Currently, "Time Out"
presents monthly interviews with Town of Carrboro department heads. Wednesday's
"Wake Up Call" offers interviews with Orange County leaders such as County
Commissioners Mark Marcopolis, Renee Price, and Chapel Hill mayor Pam
Hemminger.
j) Describe what would happen if requested funding is not awarded at all or if a reduced
allocation is recommended.
Public Gallery of Carrboro would continue to operate community radio station
WCOM 24 hours per day. If we are unable to match the revenue from another
source, we would be forced to reach into our limited reserves as we did 2013
through 2015.
k) Include any other pertinent information.
Listeners Served
DO NOT SUBMIT THIS PAGE 2/8/2017 9:06:10 AM Page 12 of 18
