BACKGROUND: A tandem axle dump truck for Public Works Sanitation was one of the vehicles approved at the March 15, 2005 BOCC meeting, The agenda item was titled Approval of Equipment and Vehicle Purchases for Fiscal Year 2004-05, The dump truck that will be replaced is a 1988 International with 208,064 miles, The dump truck is used four days weekly for the collection of bulky waste from the six solid waste convenience centers, for stone delivery and spreading and far miscellaneous projects Orange County staff developed specifications. These specifications were part of bid solicitation #1427 that was sent to eleven vendors as well as advertised on the County's website. Three companies responded, with Tar Heel Sterling Truck Center from Charlotte, North Carolina submitting the lowest responsive bid at a delivered cast of $89,969. Tar Heel Sterling offered an optional five-year extended warranty on the engine, transmission and axles for $2,995. Staff recommends the purchase of this extended warranty making the total cost of the dump truck $92,964. FINANCIAL IMPACT: The purchase price of the truck with the warranty is $92,964, Funding was included as part of the 2004-2005 equipment and vehicle purchases plan approved March 15, 2005. RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board award the bid to Tar Heel Sterling Truck Center from Charlotte, North Carolina at a cost of $92,964 and authorize the Purchasing Director to execute the necessary paperwork.
