ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: May 3, 2005 <br />Action Agenda. <br />Item No. 5-i <br />SUBJECT: Bid Award: 300 HP Tandem Axle Dump Truck for Public Works <br />DEPARTMENT: Public Works & Purchasing PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): <br />Tabulation <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Pam Janes, 245-2652 <br />Wilbert McAdoo, 245-2625 <br />TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough 732-8181 <br />Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br />Durham 688-7331 <br />Mebane 336-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To consider awarding a contract far the purchase of a 300 HP Tandem Axle Dump <br />Truck from Tar Heel Sterling Truck Center from Charlotte, North Carolina. <br />BACKGROUND: A tandem axle dump truck for Public Works Sanitation was one of the <br />vehicles approved at the March 15, 2005 BOCC meeting, The agenda item was titled Approval <br />of Equipment and Vehicle Purchases for Fiscal Year 2004-05, The dump truck that will be <br />replaced is a 1988 International with 208,064 miles, The dump truck is used four days weekly <br />for the collection of bulky waste from the six solid waste convenience centers, for stone delivery <br />and spreading and far miscellaneous projects <br />Orange County staff developed specifications. These specifications were part of bid solicitation <br />#1427 that was sent to eleven vendors as well as advertised on the County's website. Three <br />companies responded, with Tar Heel Sterling Truck Center from Charlotte, North Carolina <br />submitting the lowest responsive bid at a delivered cast of $89,969. Tar Heel Sterling offered <br />an optional five-year extended warranty on the engine, transmission and axles for $2,995. <br />Staff recommends the purchase of this extended warranty making the total cost of the dump <br />truck $92,964. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: The purchase price of the truck with the warranty is $92,964, Funding <br />was included as part of the 2004-2005 equipment and vehicle purchases plan approved March <br />15, 2005. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board award the bid to Tar Heel <br />Sterling Truck Center from Charlotte, North Carolina at a cost of $92,964 and authorize the <br />Purchasing Director to execute the necessary paperwork. <br />
