Data Update PowerPoint <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Corey Root, 919 - 245 -2496 <br />1 <br />PURPOSE: To review updated data about homelessness in Orange County submitted to the <br />United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) earlier this year. <br />BACKGROUND: The Orange County Partnership to End Homelessness ( OCPEH) was created <br />in 2008 to coordinate funding and activities to end homelessness in Orange County. OCPEH is <br />jointly funded by Orange County (39 %) and the Towns of Carrboro (15 %), Chapel Hill (41%), <br />and Hillsborough (5 %). <br />Homelessness in Orange County is up 13 %. OCPEH Coordinator Corey Root will present the <br />updated data and discuss how current increases relate to identified gaps in the homeless <br />service system, including rapid re- housing and street outreach programs. The Coordinator will <br />also discuss how another identified gap, an accessible and housing- focused homeless shelter, <br />would be filled if changes to the Good Neighbor Plan are adopted by the Town of Chapel Hill <br />this Fall. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with receiving the report. <br />SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: The following Orange County Social Justice Goals are applicable <br />to this item: <br />• GOAL: FOSTER A COMMUNITY CULTURE THAT REJECTS OPPRESSION AND <br />INEQUITY <br />The fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race or color; <br />religious or philosophical beliefs; sex, gender or sexual orientation; national origin or <br />ethnic background; age; military service; disability; and familial, residential or economic <br />status. <br />• GOAL: CREATE A SAFE COMMUNITY <br />The reduction of risks from vehicle /traffic accidents, childhood and senior injuries, gang <br />activity, substance abuse and domestic violence. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board receive the report as <br />information and provide any comments or questions. <br />
