<br />Minutes of the Hoard of Commissioners
<br />December 9, 1957
<br />The Orange County Eoard of Commissioners met in special session on Monday, Decomber 9, 1957, at
<br />o'clock a.m.
<br />Members present: Chairman R. J, 'd. Hobbs, Commissioners Donald McDade, Dwight M. Aap,
<br />. Stanford and Henry VYalkez.
<br />Members absent: Nana
<br />The minutes of the November meetings ware read and approved.
<br />A road petition from Herman Davis was received and the Clerk was asked to forward same
<br />the State Highway Department in Graham, N. C.
<br />A group of citizens from the Aycock Community appeared. {Yilfred Phelps acted as spofcemnn
<br />the group, requesting that the Hoard appropxdato money to build a principal's home for the
<br />ock Schoal, After considernbLe discussion the group was informed that the Board is unaN.e
<br />appropriate money until the new fiscal year and that said request mould hm~o to be made thru
<br />Hoard of Education in their next budget request.
<br />W. E. Murdock, District Solicitor, requested the Hoard to appoint an Assistant Solicitor
<br />for Orange County, 1n order to expedite certain cases appeazing on the Superior Court Cal.andar~
<br />and informed them that they had been given authority to make this appointment by the General
<br />Assembly by a bill enacted this past session, same being Section 7-li3.Z of the General Statutes
<br />of North Carolina. Mr. Murdock suggested that the present County So11c1tar, Hoy M. Cole, be

<br />The Board requsst A, H. Graham, Covnty Attorney, to discuss with Roy Cola the proposal made
<br />31er 1n the meeting by W, H. Murdock, concerning Mr, Cola's appointment as Assistant Solicitor
<br />• Orange County, as to his acceptance of said appoin~ent and his salary request.
<br />Chapman R. J. M. Hobbs was elected to serve a one year farm as Chairman of this Heard.
<br />A letter was read from Mr. Hubert Farrar, concerning his recent inspection of the Jail plumbing.
<br />reported that the only defects appeared to be in the fixtures and recommended they be replaced with
<br />tunes made oC stapil.ess steel.
<br />Upon motion at Commissioner Stanford, seconded by Coamissioner McDade, and unanimously passed the
<br />a recommeMed by the Fire District Hoard under date of November 30, 1957, was added to the
<br />ater Chapel Hill Fire District.
<br />The Hoard discussed with W. ft. Roberta, County Jailer, the matter of replacing the Jail
<br />abivg. Commissioner illy suggested getting bids from firms which epecittae in Jail plumbing.
<br />Gattis, Covnty Accountant, was authorized to investigate the estimated cost of the .
<br />tallation of said plumbing and fixtures.
<br />None. of the bids sulmttted far the Sheriff's nmv automobilo were accepted.
<br />William R. Kiaez, District Forester, spoke on behalf of the new forestry management progrmm
<br />being instituted by the State. Upon motion of Camniissioner Ray, seconded try Commissioner McDade,
<br />unanimously passed, the Hoard approved the new forestry management program being instituted by
<br />State. Y?ith the understanding that the inital additional cost of initlatiag the program will
<br />aken care of by existing Funds, and that all Jointly owned equipment will be divided between
<br />ge and Alamance Counties with acp difference being made up by the State,
<br />Mr. Graham informed tho Hoard o£ his conversation with Mr. Cole concerning his appointment as
<br />stant Solicitor for Orange County and hts salary request. Mr. Cole accepted said appointment
<br />reoue sted a salary of $500.00 until the new fiscal budget year. No action was taken on the
<br />er at this time.
<br />C. E. Nornaday and Collier Cobb, Jz., stated that the tax assessment on their property known
<br />Estes Hill, was in their opinion, not in line with property of similar value owned by their
<br />petitions and requested that the Eoaxd reduce the tax assessment on this property. These gentlemen
<br />'e told that they would be notified of the Board's decision at a later date.
<br />Upon motion of Coamissioner Ate, seconded by Commissioner Stanford, and unanimously passed the
<br />lowing persons were appointed to serve as tax listens for 1958.
