JCPC Business <br />Report on Conference/Training Opportunities – A staff at Wrenn House will be attending a <br />Supervisor training a little later this month and they are excited about that. Kelsey Mosley <br />attended a Women’s Conference and a Fair Housing Conference. Susan reported that Kate <br />Giduz went to Racial Equity Institute training and learned a lot. Freedom House hosted (JCPC <br />sponsored) a trauma informed training for JCPC members and programs. <br /> <br />Election of Officers – Floor opened for nomination for Chair and Vice Chair. Meg stated that <br />she is willing to serve again, but does not want to take the opportunity from others. Donna King <br />motioned that Meg McGurk serve as Chair for FY 17-18 and was seconded by Kristi Price. <br />Motion carried unanimously. Meg McGurk motioned that Bernard Miles serve as Vice Chair for <br />FY 17-18 and was seconded by Sherita Cobb. Motion carried unanimously. <br /> <br />Announcements <br /> <br />Donna shared that the Town and Gown collaborative will be holding a meeting about program <br />planning aimed at parents communicating with their kids about drinking and are seeking input <br />from the public. Meg suggested that Eleanor come in and talk to the group about the work being <br />done. <br /> <br />Gayane mentioned that Orange County ABC is the only one in the State (self-reported) with <br />signage up stating that no one under the age of 21 is allowed within the store, even if <br />accompanied by a parent, and is actively enforcing the rule. <br /> <br />Street Safe, which operates a safe driving program, also offers a class on alcohol and drug <br />education. The programs have primarily been offered out at the coast, but Anna reports that she <br />has recently been able to get them to come out to Orange County and they will be offering <br />classes in Hillsborough. They will be using the class for court referrals, but it is also open to the <br />public and appropriate for both kids and parents. <br /> <br />Anna has been working with Paws for People, a non-profit out of New Hanover County, to get a <br />court house trained facility dog to work specifically with child victims and juvenile respondents. <br />They have been approved and Anna is talking with the judges to get her approved. The dog will <br />be able to meet with victims and respondents in the office and other locations, and also be <br />allowed in the courtroom. Orange County will be the second county in NC to have a trained dog <br />for this particular purpose. <br /> <br />Val reported that DSC created a new 1 hour program to help bystanders/witnesses to harassment <br />to help intervene in a non-violent way. JCPC would like to offer this training during one the <br />regular meetings. <br /> <br />Sherita reports that OCS is organizing the Second Annual Health & Wellness Fair, sponsored by <br />Hillsborough Pharmacy, at the Barn in Hillsborough on September 23 from 10a-3p. They are <br />starting to solicit vendors now to distribute information and swag to parents. <br />
