<br />ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: September 4, 2018 <br /> Action Agenda <br /> Item No. 8-p <br /> <br />SUBJECT: Designation of an Acting County Manager During the County Manager’s <br />Temporary Absence <br /> <br />DEPARTMENT: County Manager’s Office <br /> <br /> <br />ATTACHMENT(S): <br />Letter to the Clerk Designating Travis <br />Myren as Acting County Manager <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Bonnie Hammersley, 919-245-2306 <br /> <br /> <br />PURPOSE: To approve the County Manager’s appointment of Travis Myren, Deputy County <br />Manager, to serve as Acting County Manager during the County Manager’s temporary absence <br />or disability. <br /> <br />BACKGROUND: The North Carolina General Statutes require the County Manager to file a <br />letter with the Clerk to the Board of Commissioners designating an Acting County Manager <br />during the County Manager’s temporary absence or disability. This designation is accomplished <br />by issuing a letter to the Clerk and is subject to the approval of the Board of Commissioners: <br /> <br />§ 153A-83. Acting county manager. By letter filed with the clerk, the manager may designate, subject to the <br />approval of the board of commissioners, a qualified person to exercise the powers and perform the duties <br />of manager during the manager's temporary absence or disability. During an absence or disability, the <br />board may revoke the designation at any time and appoint another person to serve until the manager <br />returns or his disability ceases. (1973, c. 822, s. 1.) <br /> <br />The letter to the Clerk (Attachment 1) designates Travis Myren, Deputy County Manager, to <br />serve as the Acting County Manager during the County Manager’s temporary absence or <br />disability. This designation will allow Mr. Myren to exercise the full scope of the County <br />Manager’s duties during the County Manager Bonnie Hammersley’s absence and, thereby, <br />insure continuity of operations. <br /> <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: The appointment of an Acting County Manager does not have a financial <br />impact. <br /> <br />SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: The appointment of an Acting County Manager provides for <br />continuity of County operations and facilitates the accomplishments of all of Orange County’s <br />Social Justice Goals. <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends the Board approve the appointment of <br />Travis Myren, Deputy County Manager, to serve as Acting County Manager during the County <br />Manager’s temporary absence or disability. <br />1
