1 <br />ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: September 4, 2018 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. 4 -a <br />SUBJECT: Orange County Arts Commission 2018 -19 Grant Recipients <br />DEPARTMENT: Orange County Arts <br />Commission <br />ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />2018 -19 Grant Awards Spreadsheet Katie Murray, 919 - 245 -2335 <br />Grant Recipients and Representatives <br />* *Updated Attendee List to Follow ** <br />PURPOSE: To present checks to local artists and arts organizations receiving 2018 -19 Orange <br />County Arts Grants. <br />BACKGROUND: The Orange County Arts Commission (OCAC) awards grants to local artists, <br />schools and nonprofit organizations from funds received from the state and Orange County <br />government for this purpose. These funds are distributed for arts projects and programs in all <br />arts disciplines. <br />Comparisons between this year's cycle and past years are noted in the chart below. <br />TOTALS <br />FY16 -17 (two cycles) <br />FY17 -18 (one cycle) <br />Total grants awarded <br />48, or 76/0 of requests <br />33, or 60% of requests <br />Total applications received <br />63 <br />55 <br />Total unique applicants <br />52 <br />48 <br />Total first -time applicants <br />13, or 25% of applicants <br />18, or 38% of applicants <br />Total first -time applicants awarded <br />7, or 13% of applicants <br />8, or 17% of applicants <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: Funds totaling $61,394 are being awarded to fourteen artists, twelve <br />nonprofit organizations, and nine schools for the 2018 -19 grants cycle. Of those funds, $40,594 <br />is from the North Carolina Arts Council Grassroots Arts Program, and the remaining $28,800 is <br />from Orange County. <br />The remaining $8,000 of grant funding was used for OCAC partnership programs including Arts <br />in Education partnership with The ArtsCenter ($5,000); the Piedmont Laureate Program with the <br />Durham Arts Council, Raleigh Arts Commission, and United Arts of Raleigh/Wake County <br />($1,500); and the Emerging Artist Grant Program with Durham Arts Council ($1,500). <br />SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: The following Orange County Social Justice Goal is applicable to <br />this item: <br />
