Formerly the Gene
Cartledge Award for Excellence in Environ-
mental Education, the award recognizes
people who have shown skill in encouraging
a better understanding of the complex rela-
tionship between a clean environment and a
healthy economy.
Kredit has developed a model environ-
mental education program that is centered
on long -term watershed restoration while
incorporating student leadership and com-
munity involvement. Kredit's students -
2,000 to date —have built and operated a
salmon hatchery for 23 years. To improve
salmon habitat, his students have planted
more than 15,000 trees and shrubs along the
riparian zone of Fishtrap Creek, the stream
that borders the high school campus. His
students completed stream surveys that
form the basis for streamside restoration by
local planning agencies. As he has for the
past 17 years, Kredit will spend this summer
working as a park ranger/ naturalist in
Yellowstone National Park and teaching
environmental education at The American
Wilderness Leadership School in Wyoming.
Linda Mead, director of the Delaware &
Raritan Greenway in Princeton, N.J., re-
ceived the International Paper Conservation
Partnership Award. Formerly the Alexander
Calder Conservation Award and now in its
14th year, the award honors individuals who
protect habitat in the U.S. through partner-
ships between business and conservation.
Under Mead's leadership, the organiza-
tion applied innovative techniques to protect
14 properties last year worth more than $42
million. To accomplish this, Mead built
strong, effective and productive partnerships
with communities, public agencies, corpora-
tions and individuals.
Mead also founded the Delaware River
Greenway Partnership, Significant Natural
Areas Protection Program and the Land Use
Forum of Bucks County that resulted in a
$59 million bond referendum in the south-
eastern Pennsylvania community. She is a
cofounder of the Delaware River Sojourn,
an eight -day annual canoe trip that high-
lights protection of the Delaware River
thtough corporate sponsorship and partner-
ship with federal, state, and local agencies.
T8T8-8LZLZ JN 'HJno'do9SllIH
18 T 8 X09 Od
1d34 'd3SNOD S3d Q dIAN3 ALA 39NV'd0
2i01MWO
II:)NV-S 4IAba 2dW
60ZZZ VA `uOlnutllV
OZLL 9IMS .IS luaX 'N 009L
IF 0 k
dit
6 id I
