Baldwin also has 40 varieties of toma- <br />toes (mostly heirloom types) planted on black, red, <br />green, and blue plastic mulch, paper, and landscape fab- <br />ric. The muskmelons and watermelons were planted in <br />early June for a late season harvest. Tomatoes will be <br />planted in mid -July for a fall harvest. Different types of <br />plastic and paper mulches also are being evaluated. <br />Page 2 <br />Edible and Medicinal Mushroom Farming— researchers <br />are helping farmers with inoculation and cultivation of ex- <br />otic mushrooms which have edible and medicinal proper- <br />ties. Researchers are also studying a variety of mushroom <br />substrates and environments to determine which will be the <br />most practical. <br />• Tilapia Production — researchers are studying which spe- <br />cies of tilapia and which production methods are best suited <br />to North Carolina <br />• Meat Goat Health Monitoring —new methods for herd <br />health monitoring and the management of internal parasites <br />in meat goats. Demonstrations and educational materials to <br />assist in improving herd health will be provided. <br />Medicinal Herbs from the Greenhouse to the Field — <br />demonstration featur- <br />ing 9 medicinal herbs: <br />Aztec Sweet Herb, <br />Black Cohosh, Catnip, <br />Echinacea, Gotu Kola, <br />Peppermint, Stevia, St. <br />John's Wort, and Vicks <br />Plant. Extractions from <br />some of these herbs <br />will be compared to <br />assays from commer- <br />cial herbs. <br />Upscale Pork for <br />Small - Scale Hog Producers — methods to produce profit- <br />able pork with a small -scale farm application.
