The Fund worked closely with land-
owner Forest Systems in the $13.6 million acquisition,
which culminated 20 years of effort by the state to protect
the site. The easement permanently restricts development
on the land, which borders the Lower Suwannee National
Wildlife Refuge and acts as a freshwater filtration basin for
the Lower Suwannee watershed. The company will con-
tinue pine forestry operations on 15,000 acres of upland
under new guidelines aimed at enhancing the swamp eco-
system. Forest Systems retained rights to hunting leases
but will allow public access for hiking and bird watching.
See Land Protected, page 6
Ib
Vol. 13, No. 1 January —March 2002
Editorial: The Conservation Fund's
chairman calls for an American network
of parks and open space. 2
Small Tracts: Oregon's growth management
law faces another challenge, America steps
up its recycling of brownfields, Coloradans 4
take steps to better manage growth and
California links growth with water supply.
Thank you: A grateful thank you to 140
readers who recently contributed
$6,685 to the COMMON GROUND
Research Fund.
Corporate Notes: American Electric Power,
BP and Alliant Energy are helping develop
the nation's first carbon emissions trading 7
system, and Johnson & Johnson and Philip
Morris are supporting Conservation Fund
projects in several states.
Personnel: Lawrence A.
