We have not had an opportunity to sufficiently explore instruction in the high
schools to comment on differences in instruction, but can point to the lower OCS
mathematics achievement in the middle school, which may account for the lower scores in
science courses that are heavily mathematics based.
A variety of AP courses are offered in both districts. In OCS, Cedar Ridge High
School began offering the International Baccalaureate diploma in 2004. Sixty tenth -grade
students are enrolled in that three -year program. The most significant AP difference is
that CHCCS offers more world language courses (i.e., German, Japanese) and AP arts
courses. In OCS in 2004 -2005, 232 Orange High School students are enrolled in AP
courses (duplicated), while Cedar Ridge High School enrolls 242 students in AP courses and
60 students in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, for a total of 534 students
(see Table 38). In 2003 -2004 CHCCS reported 2,112 (duplicated) AP course enrollments
(998 at CHHS, 1114 at ECHHS. CHCCS offer environmental science as well as ancient,
renaissance, and modern art history courses at the AP level. Although OCS lists no arts
courses at the AP level, it does offer Music Theory, Theater, and Art III in the
International Baccalaureate Program.
Table 38: Advanced Course Enrollments*
Source: CHCCS and OCS District Offices, December 2004
Table 39 below indicates the percentage of students who scored at 3 or above (on a
scale from 1 -5) on the AP tests that they took. OCS students were encouraged but not
required to take the test in 2003 -2004, the year for which this data is compiled. Beginning
2004 -2005, OCS students must take the AP test for AP courses in which they are enrolled.
Decisions about what score is required to indicate college level proficiency varies by college
and academic discipline. At UNC- Chapel Hill a score of 4 is generally required for college
credit.
Table 39: Percentage of Students Scoring 3 or above on AP Tests*
CHCCS
OCS
CHCCS
CHHS
ECHHS
CRHS
OHS
AP Enrollments (duplicated)
998
1,114
242
.232
IB Enrollments
OHS
60
161
Total Advanced Course Enrollments
2,112
534
Source: CHCCS and OCS District Offices, December 2004
Table 39 below indicates the percentage of students who scored at 3 or above (on a
scale from 1 -5) on the AP tests that they took.
