OCS <br />As a district OCS lists 26 reading specialists. Each elementary school has between <br />two and five reading specialists, with an average of three per elementary school. Reading <br />Resource teachers and Reading Recovery specialists constitute this cohort. New Hope, <br />Hillsborough, and Grady Brown each have one Reading Recovery Teacher; Efland Cheeks, <br />Cameron Park and Pathways each have two; and Central has three. <br />There is one reading resource teacher in each middle school and none in high <br />schools. <br />Foreign Language <br />Spanish classes have just recently been added to the program of OCS elementary <br />schools. <br />All CHCCS elementary schools offer a world language: Spanish is offered at six and <br />three offer French. Two dual language programs are offered; one in English /Chinese, and <br />the other in English /Spanish. <br />Science Specialists <br />OCS relies on an inquiry based science program, TASC (Teachers and Scientists <br />Collaborating), and has purchased science kits to support this Duke University generated <br />curriculum. CHCCS employs science specialists in each of its elementary schools. Of the <br />nine specialists, two are certified teachers. The others, hired as assistants, have their <br />undergraduate degrees in science. The state is planning to introduce science End of Grade <br />(EOG) tests in 2006. <br />• CHCCS: 5CO,5, science kits, a Discovery lab with a science specialist. <br />Classroom teachers typically teach science, but they can go to the lab once <br />every 3 weeks for enrichment, a challenge, process- science. It's really <br />exciting. The kids love it. They even do some things with robotics. The lab <br />is well- stocked with kits for everygrade level. <br />Arts Programs <br />Arts specialists are present in the schools in both districts. Elementary students go <br />to art and music generally once a week. In both districts there is some integration of the <br />arts with literacy instruction. In OCS, Cameron Park has worked closely with the Arts <br />Education project in UNC- Chapel Hill's School of Education, and New Hope has worked with <br />that institution's Curriculum, Music and Community project that integrates old time music <br />with instruction in the academic disciplines.
