According to 2003 -2004 NCOPI School Report Carddata, and Table 6, at the high
school level, both CHCCS and OCS average class size was approximately 19 students. Table 6
also shows average class sizes in a number of subjects, ranging from basic to advanced
placement courses. It is important to note that the reporting years are different for the
average class sizes given by subject (October 2004 for CHCCS, December 2003 for OCS).
Another important consideration in terms of average class size is that there are many
classes that exceed the average and many classes with fewer than the average; districts are
required to offer some of these courses, even at lower numbers, so that students meet
degree requirements. Additionally, districts commit to students being able to follow through
on a course of study (e.g., foreign language).
Table 6: High School Course Class Size Averages
Sources: * CHCCS Opening of School Report, October 2004, * *OCS District Data, December 2003
* * * 2003 -2004 NC Report Card for CHCCS d OC,S
Pre - School Enrollments*
(*Source: Rivest, M.
