Article 10: Definitions <br /> Section 10.1: Definitions <br /> <br />Orange County, North Carolina – Unified Development Ordinance Page 10-20 <br /> <br />commercial and industrial appliances; manufactured homes, recreational vehicles and related <br />components; automotive, farm and construction machinery; and, commercial building components. <br />Industrial, Heavy <br />Manufacturing & processing operations with a greater potential to impact surrounding properties, where a <br />majority or large component of the operation may occur in the open air. Such uses may include, but not <br />be limited to, the following: asphalt mixing plants; cement manufacturing or processing; commercial food <br />processing (packing and rendering) plants, including meat, poultry and fish; and, concrete mixing plants. <br />Infiltration <br />The absorption of stormwater run-off into the ground. Infiltration allows for pollutants to be filtered from <br />the water prior to its reaching the groundwater table, preventing the deposit of the pollutants directly into <br />drinking water supplies. <br />Institutional Use <br />A nonprofit, religious, or public use, such as a church, library, public or private school, hospital, university, <br />or government owned or operated building, structure, or land used for public purpose. <br />Interested Person <br />For purposes of quasi-judicial hearings an interested person is one who has standing as that term is <br />defined by applicable North Carolina statutory and case law. <br />Junk Yard <br />An establishment operated or maintained for the purpose of storing, dismantling, salvaging, recycling, <br />buying or selling scrap or used materials such as paper, metals, rubber, rags, glass, wrecked, used or <br />dismantled products and articles, such as machinery, vehicles, appliances and the like. <br />Junked or Wrecked Motor Vehicles <br />Motor Vehicles which do not display a current license plate or a current registration sticker and which <br />either: (a) are partially dismantled or wrecked, or (b) cannot be self-propelled or moved in the manner in <br />which originally intended to move. <br />Kennel (Class I) <br />The keeping of more than six but less than 20 animals of any species, excluding domesticated livestock, <br />on a parcel of property for the purpose of showing, competition, hunting, or sport. All animals shall be <br />owned by the property owner. <br />Kennel (Class II) <br />An establishment involving animals of any species, excluding domesticated livestock, engaged in any of <br />the following: <br />a) The owning or keeping, for any purpose, of 20 or more animals <br />b) The selling and/or training of guard dogs or security dogs <br />c) The keeping of more than five animals at any given time for the purpose of breeding, boarding, or <br />rehabilitation. <br />The operator of a Kennel (Class II) shall be allowed to reside on the property to ensure the continuous <br />care of the animals kept on-site. <br />Lamp <br />See Outdoor Lighting, Lamp. <br />Land Area Measurement Definitions <br />(See Lot Line, Lot Line Front, Lot Line Rear, Lot Line Side, Open Side, Open Space Front, Open Space <br />Rear) <br />Land-Disturbing Activity <br /> 157
