Article 5: Uses <br /> Section 5.7: Standards for Recreational Uses <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Orange County, North Carolina – Unified Development Ordinance Page 5-63 <br /> <br />(1) Shooting activities5 <br />(a) Nothing within this section shall be construed as limiting or otherwise <br />restricting hunting activities or the use of fireworks. <br />(b) All shooting or targeting activities shall be oriented to keep discharged <br />bullets, shot, and/or arrows on the property. <br />(c) A projectile-proof backstop consisting of concrete, steel, earth or any <br />combination thereof, a minimum 15 feet in height and 30 feet in width, <br />shall be erected and maintained behind all target areas. <br />(d) Shooting activities and required backstop shall be located a minimum of <br />300 feet from all property lines, rights-of-way, or access easements and <br />1,000 feet from occupied dwelling units external to the site. <br />(e) Warning signs posted at one hundred-foot intervals along the perimeter <br />of the property. <br />(f) The equivalent of a Type B land use buffer shall be preserved and/or <br />installed along the perimeter of the property where shooting activities <br />occur. <br />(g) The use of exploding shells, targets, or other similar materials shall be <br />prohibited. <br />(2) Motor cross and Go-Kart Tracks6 <br />(a) All tracks and/or paths shall be located a minimum of 100 ft. from a <br />property line. Under no circumstances may a track or path cross over <br />active septic fields. <br />(b) A Type B Land Use Buffer shall be maintained along the perimeter of the <br />property in accordance with this Ordinance. <br />5.7.15.7.2 Recreational Facilities <br />(A) General Standards of Evaluation <br />(1) The standards included herein shall be applied to the following for-profit <br />recreational facilities, including but not limited to: <br />(a) Tennis clubs, <br />(b) Swim clubs, <br />(c) Racquet ball, <br />(d) Squash clubs, <br />(e) Pitch and putt courses, <br />(f) Amusement areas, <br />(g) Bowling alleys, <br />(h) Skating rinks, <br />(i) Shooting ranges, <br />(j) Billiard and pool halls, <br /> <br />5 There have been issued associated with the discharge of firearms on private property, focusing on noise and <br />public safety issues. Staff is attempting to establish reasonable land use regulations in an attempt to address <br />safety concerns by requiring discharged items remain on the subject parcel. <br />6 In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s staff received numerous complaints from local property owners over the use <br />of motorcycles and go‐karts on private property. We are amending existing regulations to establish setback and <br />land use buffer requirements to address these concerns. <br />13
