Article 10: Definitions <br /> Section 10.1: Definitions <br /> <br />Orange County, North Carolina – Unified Development Ordinance Page 10-53 <br /> <br />Telecommunication Facilities, Personal Wireless Services (PWS) or Personal <br />Telecommunications Service (PTS) <br />As defined and used in the 1996 Telecommunications Act. <br />Telecommunication Facilities, Repairs and maintenance <br />The replacement or repair of any components of a wireless facility where the replacement is identical to <br />the component being replaced or for any matters that involve the normal repair and maintenance of a <br />wireless facility without the addition, removal or change of any of the physical or visually discernable <br />components or aspects of a wireless facility that will add to the visible appearance of the facility as <br />originally permitted, but does not constitute a modification to a wireless facility or support structure. <br />Telecommunication Facilities, Roofline <br />The overall ridgeline of the structure, not including cupolas, elevator towers, clock towers or other similar <br />features. <br />Telecommunication Facilities, Search ring <br />The area within which a wireless support structure must be located in order to meet service objectives of <br />the wireless service provider using the wireless facility or wireless support structure. <br />Telecommunication Facilities, Self-Support/Lattice Wireless support structure <br />A tapered structure broad at the base and narrower at the top consisting of cross-members and diagonal <br />bracing and without guyed support. <br />Telecommunication Facilities, Stealth or Stealth Technology <br />A design or treatment that minimizes adverse aesthetic and visual impacts on the land, property, <br />buildings, and other facilities adjacent to, surrounding, and in generally the same area as the requested <br />location of such wireless support structures, which shall mean building the least visually and physically <br />intrusive facility that is not technologically or commercially impracticable under the facts and <br />circumstances. Stealth technology includes such technology as Distributed Antenna System (DAS) or its <br />functional equivalent or camouflage where the structure is disguised to make it less visually obtrusive and <br />not recognized to the average person as a wireless support structure. <br />Telecommunication Facilities, Substantial Modification <br />The mounting of a proposed wireless facility on a wireless support structure that substantially changes <br />the physical dimensions of the support structure. <br /> <br />Telecommunication Facilities, Telecommunication Equipment <br />Equipment, which is located either upon a telecommunication tower or a structure and includes some <br />form of antenna for the purpose of transmitting and receiving wireless services. <br />Telecommunication Facilities, Wireless facility Stealth <br />A wireless support structure designed using stealth technology such that its primary purpose is, or <br />visually appears to be, something other than the support of telecommunications equipment, the apparent <br />purpose of the wireless support structure is customarily considered as accessory to a use that is allowed <br />in the zoning district, and the structure and its primary use comply with this Ordinance. <br />Telecommunication Facilities, Utility pole <br />A structure that is designed for and used to carry lines, cables, or wires for telephone, cable television, or <br />electricity, or to provide lighting. <br />Telecommunication Facilities, Unforeseen Events <br />Condemnations of existing telecommunications wireless support structures for road projects, casualty of <br />existing telecommunications wireless support structures, blocking of signals from new construction <br />necessitating a relocation of a telecommunication wireless support structure, or the need to replace an <br />45
