MINUTES-Draft <br />ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF HEALTH <br /> June 27, 2018 <br />S:\Managers Working Files\BOH\Agenda & Abstracts\2018 Agenda & Abstracts/ June Page 2 <br />Victoria Hudson, Interim Environmental Health Director, provided updates on the 2017-2018 <br />projects, process adjustments and the process for 2018-2019. Below is a summary: <br /> <br />• The grant cycle was moved to a fiscal year in 2017. There was a mini cycle that <br />occurred during this transition move. <br />• During the mini-cycle, Pre-k Tooth brushing initiative finished full implementation in June <br />2017. <br />• There were 3 projects funded in 2017. <br />- “Be the 1 To” Suicide Prevention Campaign submitted by Ashley Rawlinson. <br />Multiple agencies were involved. Activities included a kickoff event and an <br />awareness walk. <br />- Front of the House (FOH) Food Safety Training submitted by Victoria Hudson. <br />FOH refers to from the plate to the table and includes the hostess, wait staff, <br />silverware roller, etc. Although video and booklet production has taken more <br />time than expected, the first measure of implementation will be in July with <br />training provided free of charge to every establishment in Orange County. <br />- Onsite Water Protection Calendars submitted by Barbara Hawksworth. <br />Calendars were distributed to BOH members. The calendars include informative <br />photos and helpful tips. <br />• Adjustments to the process include encourage team approach, know technological <br />limitations, be realistic about time for implementation and develop a rubric for grading <br />grant proposals. <br />• Out of 9 proposals submitted in the 2018-2019 cycle, 5 were selected for full application <br />and were funded. Implementation will begin as early as July 1st. <br />- Transportation Assistance submitted by Renee Kemske, et al. <br />- Patient Education submitted by Julie Johnson and Meghann Johnson. <br />- Intraoral Cameras submitted by Dr. Stephanie George. <br />- 41 or Below submitted by Angela Sowers, et al. <br />- Art for OCHD submitted by Kristin Prelipp. <br /> <br />The BOH had questions that were addressed by Ms. Hudson. <br /> <br />B. Annual Communicable Disease Report <br /> <br />Iulia Vann, Public Health Services Manager, gave an overview of the communicable disease <br />data for the year 2017. Ms. Vann noted that this meets Accreditation Benchmark 2.5. Some of <br />the highlights from the information she gave during her presentation include: <br /> <br />Foodborne Illness – Salmonella decreased. The spike in 2016 was due to the Chapel Hill dairy <br />outbreak. Many of the foodborne illnesses resulted from people having traveled out of the <br />country. <br /> <br />Vaccine Preventable Diseases – There was an increase in Hepatitis B cases. Testing for <br />Hepatitis B had increased. Some of the cases were not new and some stats were based on <br />prevalence not incidence as the CD team receives a report every time a positive case occurs <br />even if the individual already knew their status. It is required to report flu deaths not actual <br />cases. <br /> <br />Waterborne Illnesses – Ms. Vann explained that the 2014 spike was from a case when Durham <br />swimmers used OC facilities. One of the legionellosis cases was identified as deriving from a <br />hot tub at a rental. The 2nd case’s exposure source was not identified.
