Agenda Item Number:

ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF HEALTH
AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY

Meeting Date: August 22, 2018
Agenda Item Subject: Family Success Alliance: Strategic Planning Update
Attachment(s): FSA Update Presentation
Staff or Board Member Reporting: Coby Jansen Austin
Purpose: ____ Action
_ X_ Information only
____ Information with possible action

Summary Information: Coby Jansen Austin will provide an update on Family Success
Alliance (FSA) programming and on its strategic planning process. FSA was created at
the initiative of the Board of County Commissioners in June 2014 in response to a
growing number of children and families living in poverty in Orange County. Drawing on
evidenced-based models such as the Harlem Children’s Zone and Promise
Neighborhoods, FSA is an initiative of the Health Department that works collaboratively
with schools, community partners, faith-based groups, advocates and others to build a
cradle to college and career pipeline of supports for children and families in two
selected “zones”; one in the New Hope area south of Hillsborough and one in the
downtown Chapel Hill/Carrboro area.

Now in its fourth year, FSA has successfully recruited three cohorts of students and
their families into the navigator program (120+ families) and is actively recruiting the
fourth cohort. In 2018, FSA reached more than 230 students with summer enrichment
programming by sponsoring school-based camps with both school districts and
partnering with the Department of Social Services to extend summer camp scholarships
to students and their siblings. We continue to partner with 10 nonprofits to provide
services to zone families, including financial literacy, girl scout troops, mentors, mental
health services, parenting support, and more.

Coby will review progress made by the Strategic Planning Committee and proposed
evolution of the family empowerment model, partnerships, systems-level change, and
expansion.

Recommended Action: ___Approve
___Approve & forward to Board of Commissioners for action
___Approve & forward to ___________________________
_X_Accept as information
___Revise & schedule for future action
___Other (detail):
