CTC believes that the more children hear the stories of
these women's lives — stories of immense courage, determination,
and creativity — the more they will be able to see themselves as
having what it takes to do the same.
The proposed play is the second in a series of plays CTC plans to
develop. While all of the plays in their catalogue will aim to
incorporate the character values of courage, perseverance, integrity,
and creativity, each play will be focused on a different educational
topic. This play will explore environmental activism, and will include
the stories of such remarkable women as Rachel Carson, Julia
Butterfly Hill, Birute Galdikas, Winona LaDuke, and Peggy Shepard.
Emma and Julie and the rest of the CTC writers hope to empower
audiences to gain a deeper connection with the natural world, and to
take ownership of the part each of us plays in supporting a thriving
environment in our own community.
CTC will market the show to elementary principals, teachers, and PTA
members in the Chapel Hill /Carrboro City School system, as well as
those in the Orange County School system. The company's goal in
2019 is to perform the new play in 6 schools serving a total of 1,800
students in Orange County, and 3 additional schools serving 300
students each in the greater Triangle. In addition to elementary
school performances, CTC aims to perform the play in several other
venues such as science fairs, museums, or libraries. The total
number of projected students reached throughout Orange County
and the greater Triangle is over 2,500.
